An Aboriginal woman meditating to follow her bliss.

I was in my yard with my dog letting him relieve himself. While taking in nature and a car turned to the street that was closest to me. The Driver was a Young Brother who’s window was rolled down and stopped to ask loudly in the sound of urgency “Got a lighter”? while motioning the igniting of one in his hand, with an actual cigarette in his mouth. I responded shaking my head no and the Young Brother proceeded to drive. I said to myself “wow if only my brother truly knew the effects smoking had on his life and then a way to stop it”. As soon as I left the computer from writing this I spoke with an so called black woman and she told me she had to step the side because she was gonna kill herself. Meaning she was about to smoke a cigarette. I told her I was in the process of writing an article on that right now. She told me she will read it when I’m done. Now more than ever I wanted to find out these ways for quitting smoking, so I began doing some research and here’s what I came up with:

Just quit!

Yeah… not that simple. Cigarettes have nicotine in them which is highly addictive. Nicotine is an “alkaloid of tobacco, a vasoconstrictor, stimulant and addictive agent”- McGraw-Hill Education Nurses’ Dictionary 4th Edition. It transmits rapidly to the brain sending a short term feeling of relief of tension and relaxation but is replaces with the feeling of needing another cigarette.

Go for a walk

I know we explained this one 3 Tips to be Happy and Positive. But seriously go for a walk! 30 minutes of exercise releases a chemical in the brain that improves your state of being and rids of unnecessary stress, helps with your heart and changes your focus to something else.

Relax

Easier said than done but literally focus on being at peace. Take deep breaths, stretch, do some yoga.

Support

Talk to a friend, reach out to others for support. I don’t recommend just quitting instantly by yourself. According to Webmd “About 90% of people who try to quit smoking do it without outside support — no aids, therapy, or medicine. Although most people try to quit this way, it’s not the most effective or successful method. Only between 4% and 7% are able to quit by doing it alone”. Letting others around you know you’re trying to quit so they can encourage you.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a stress reliever, as well as many other things and is a great way to quit smoking.

Tila

Supports the “immune system, relax nerves, depression, and treats insomnia, fever headaches, migraines inflammatory skin conditions, and the liver and gallbladder” – Alkaline Herbal Medicine by Aqiyl Aniys.

Banana

Bananas help with cravings and relaxation.

Change your diet

Eating more natural foods which help the body perform better when it’s in its natural state.

Fasting

The human body itself is self-healing so by fasting you are letting the body correct any errors going on.

Take care of yourself

Being well rested and drinking a lot of water will help with getting rid of unnecessary stress.

Caffeine

“Caffeine is an alkaloid of tea, coffee. Central nervous system stimulant, analgesic”-McGraw-Hill Education Nurses’ Dictionary 4th Edition. Cut back the caffeine it raises your heartbeat and anxiety. Caffeine stays in your body for 4-6 hours.

Stay busy

Exercise, read, look into art, do some writing, meditation, or listen to music. Just find something beneficial to keep you busy.

Smoking in the car

Remove the ashtray from the car and substitute it with a piece of paper of a list of why you want to quit smoking. Leave some fresh in scents in the car as well to replace the smoking smell.

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol is a problem as well which isn’t beneficial for you and can lead to smoking.

Stay away from smoke areas

This will only antagonize you to smoke when you are trying to quit.

After meals

Instead of smoking after meals, immediately find something productive to do.

Narcotics

If you’re wondering why we haven’t said anything about nicotine patches or inhalers etc is because we don’t recommend the use of using other narcotics to get off another narcotic. But if you need to use so you may but just remember the medicine is the food.
